The beginning of every year brings promise, even to the music industry.

It’s a fresh start for artists, a clean slate to start over, create new content, and hopefully get a hold of listeners. No doubt that this new year, one thing every artist, either A-list or upcoming, will be looking forward to is putting out hits. Many will try, but only a few will be able to pull it off.

We’re already wearing off the second week of the year, and the expectations are beginning to ramp up as artists are starting to release new singles. Some in anticipation of their projects, while some as strategic positioning for what could come.

The big question is now, who is gonna have the first hit of 2022?

In 2017, it was Wizkid that opened the year with his smash hit, “Daddy Yo,” off his “Sounds From The Other Side” LP. In 2018, it was Olamide with the Killertunes-produced “Woske.”

Kizz Daniel pulled up very early in 2019 to deliver the monster hit, “Fvck You” that later made it to his “King of Love” album in 2020. Meanwhile, in 2020, DJ Neptune did the honors by releasing what was perhaps the biggest song of the year, in “Nobody” featuring Joeboy and Mr. Eazi.

Last year, the first hit of the year comfortable came from Teni who teamed up with Davido to do the love number, “For You,” one of 2021’s biggest tracks.

It’s a new year, and there’s a whole lot of artists planning to put out stuff already. From Wizkid to Burna Boy, to Adekunle Gold, and Fireboy… the list is long. But who do you think will do it successfully?

Let’s hear what you think.
